Sea Containers WA have just completed another successful Arctic SuperStore supply and installation. On Monday 23rd May our intrepid four man team assembled a 40’ft 2-bay and 40’ft 3-bay Arctic Superstore on Groote Eylandt. Groote Eylandt is 650km (or a 90min flight) east of Darwin, where Manganese was first mined in 1966.
Our Arctic Superstore Account Manager, Shane Bettinson, had been working with the client since November 2015, after the client first viewed the Arctic Superstore at our October Open Day. With negotiations taking place over the recent months, a final deal was reached with the client in March this year.
Our experienced team led by Shane Bettinson and Brett Ozanne quickly swung into action in order to meet the clients delivery and install deadlines. In this case, the Arctic Superstores are being used for the storage of frozen and chilled products whilst the island’s Supermarket is completely refurbished.
The units were all directly shipped from the factory in China to Darwin Port and then loaded onto a barge for the three day voyage to Groote Eylandt. The installation team from Perth covered a total of 10.000 kms with an approximate 11 and a half hours of flying time (with some beautiful views and sunsets seen along the way!).
After acclimatising to the extremely hot and humid conditions, the first job was to have the containers transferred from the nearby wharf to site. Local road closures were in place as each individual container was craned over a number of buildings into their precise position. After setting exact levels using a laser level (dealing with a slope of up to 500mm), the team was ready to commence the installation and commissioning of both Superstores.
In conjunction with our client, the Sea Containers WA team utilised a 17T crane and elevated working platform to have all work completed by noon on Thursday, and operations were completed by midday on the Thursday 26th May, a little under 3 days since the team landed on the island.
Our client is extremely impressed in the Arctic Superstores and our team’s ability to install them quickly and safely. They are in the process of reviewing other areas of their operation to determine if Arctic Superstores can provide a more efficient and cost effective return for their business.
